In three layers, my work is all about impression.
A successful work hits you all at once–its color, its energy, its beauty. It creates an impression. You are impressed.
I start out impressed by a visual event: a pattern of illumination and shadows across a face, the forms and hollows in a group of houses, the reflections of skyscrapers in the glass surfaces of other skyscrapers. Something impacts me with a sense of wonder, and gives me the impetus to process, interpret and reflect back that image.
And woodcuts are made by impression. Ink rolled onto a carved board (adhering to the surface that was not carved, and missing the part of the surface that was carved away) is pressed against paper, transferring the ink.
