Aigrette, 2016

Painting acrylic on panel
20 x 16 in

Aigrette is the name of the long plumes that were traditionally harvested from waterbirds, like this snowy egret in breeding plumage, for use as ornaments on women's hats. Outrage over the over slaughter of snowy egrets and other waterbirds for the millinery trade led to the formation of the the National Audubon Society in 1896.
