Herb Mears was born in New York City in 1923. He was a graduate of the first class of the New York City Schools’ High School of Music and Art in 1940, and continued his art instruction at the Harrison School of Fine Art in that city. After service in the U. S. Army during World War II, Mears studied at Atelier Leger in Paris (1948-1950) and Studio Hinna in Rome (1950).

He came to Houston in 1951 and opened the Studio of Contemporary Art with his friend and fellow Atelier Leger student, David Adickes. Mears worked for the Humble Oil Company from 1951 until around 1964. He also taught at the Contemporary Arts Museum Summer School, the Museum School, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the University of Houston, and Rice University.

Mears was represented by the James Bute, DuBose, Wilhelm, and Nolan-Rankin galleries in Houston, and his work was exhibited both locally and regionally. His works were exhibited in shows at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (including a purchase prize winner in the 1959 Houston Annual), the Delgado Museum in New Orleans, the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, and the University of Houston. Mears’ paintings are included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, as well as in important corporate collections in Houston, including those of the Shell Oil Company, Mitchell Energy Corporation, Texas Instruments, Hines Interests Corporation, and Price-Waterhouse.
